OUR MISSION

β€œTo provide benefit to the communities of the Rivers Colne, Blackwater, Crouch and Roach. Notably the owners, operators and crew members of Essex built working vessels. Assisting, undertaking and organising activities and events that aid the preservation, conservation, maintenance and operation of these historic crafts.”

Born out of a life long passion for these vessels and the realisation that there has to be a fresh approach to bringing together owners, crews, families, businesses and supporters of these precious workhorses.

Meet the Essex Heritage Workboat Crew

  • Director

When you are only four years of age and a Thames Barge becomes your home there is every chance the vessels of Essex will seep into your soul.

Gerard has skippered, restored, sailed and saved many of the EHWB fleet.

His passion now as he considers retirement is to ensure there is a strong community to take care of the remaining workboats.

After many chats over a cup of tea with other owners, boatbuilders and skippers Essex Heritage Workboats Community Interest Company was formed.

  • Director

Our youngest Thames Barge Skipper, Lyndon too has the passion for these workhorses running through his veins.

From his early teens, all his spare moments were to be taken up being involved with old working boats.

After he completed his degree in photography, the pull of the barges still remained as strong as ever.

At the other other end of the scale to Gerard, Lyndon represents the new generation of people who will be the ones to care for the fleet in years to come.
