Infrastructure

The yards and ports around the Coast of Essex were a familiar sight and a source of local employment for their communities.

Sadly over the years many have been run down or even disappeared completely to be replaced by waterside development. As a island nation we may one day realise the waterside has a value much greater than a view.

The last surviving Essex Heritage Workboat Yard is Walter Cook’s at the Hythe Quay, Maldon.

Yards

Existing yards that built the fleet

  • Once a centre for the building of ships ,fishing smacks and barges.

  • On the Hythe Quay sits the evolution of the last yard to still be in operation.

It was here that Walter Cook built Thames Sailing Barges, Maldon smacks and tenders.

Today, the yard is used for the maintainance of a few of the remaining barge fleet.

The blocks and the shed were replaced in the early 1970’s to improve the facilities which attracted a large number of the fleet to head for Maldon.
