Each September thousands of volunteers across the country invite you to experience local history, architecture and culture. All for free. 

Heritage Open Days runs 9-18 September 2022

Across the country there is the opportunity to explore historic building and events celebrating our amazing heritage.

Across Essex we have selected a few of the amazing venues that are open for the weekend.

Town to Sea Trail - Colchester. Exploring the link form the town to the port

Captain Jone House, Mayflower’s captain’s house is open at Harwich

Harwich Maritime Museum

Treadwheel Crane, the last example of this incredible engineering. This 17th century wooden treadwheel crane, which was manned by two men, was originally used in shipbuilding in the nearby Naval Yard. It was moved in 1932 to its current position and is now a unique historical attraction and a Grade II* listed building. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
