This is a relay from Maldon to Mersea on the tide for our wonderful Maldon Class Three oyster smacks and our Mersea Bumkins. The Smacks head down river from Maldon carrying their cargo of Maldon Salt + Oysters and just like they did in trade they will unload them into the Mersea Bumpkins who have headed up river from Mersea.
Once safely aboard the open gaff rigged bumkins, they will race for home. Back on their mooring, it’s a skull ashore with their precious load, quick dash and the winning team is the one who gets the salt + oysters into the hands of a local Mersea oyster merchant.
